Your dishwasher throws error code E24. You Google it. You land on a sketchy site that wants your email before showing a blurry manual. Sound familiar?
Manufacturers bury manuals. Links rot. Model pages vanish when a product gets discontinued. The fix is simple: keep every manual you own in one place you control.
Why a manual shelf beats searching
The manual that shipped in the box is the right one. The one you find online might be a newer revision with different part numbers. When you self-host, you keep the exact PDF that matches the exact unit in your kitchen.
No ads. No email walls. No "click here to download" malware traps. And it works when your internet is down — which is exactly when you need to reset a tripped appliance.
Step 1: Gather the manuals
Walk your house. Note the brand and model number of each appliance: fridge, oven, washer, dryer, microwave, router, water heater, lawn mower. The model number is on a sticker — inside the door, on the back, or under the base.
Download the official PDF for each one. Search the brand site directly, not a random aggregator. Save each file with a clear name: Samsung-WF45-Washer.pdf.
Step 2: Pick a home for the files
You don't need anything fancy. Two easy options:
Paperless-ngx — a document manager that reads text inside PDFs so you can search "error E24" and jump to the right page. Runs in Docker:
docker run -d -p 8000:8000 \
-v ./data:/usr/src/paperless/data \
-v ./media:/usr/src/paperless/media \
paperlessngx/paperless-ngx
Just a folder — if that feels like too much, drop the PDFs into a shared folder on Nextcloud or Syncthing. Searchable by filename, synced to your phone.
Step 3: Tag by room and appliance
Add tags: kitchen, laundry, warranty-active. Now when the oven misbehaves, you filter to kitchen and find it in two taps. Add the purchase date and serial number as notes while you're there — handy if a warranty claim ever comes up.
Step 4: Make it reachable from your phone
You'll be standing in front of the broken machine, not at your desk. Install the Nextcloud or Paperless app, or set up a reverse proxy so you can open the shelf in a browser. Keep it behind your home VPN — these are just manuals, but no reason to expose the server.
Step 5: Add new stuff as it arrives
The moment a new appliance comes home, snap the manual and model sticker into the shelf. Thirty seconds now saves a frantic search in two years when the thing starts beeping.
Your one move today
Pick the appliance most likely to break — probably the washer or dishwasher — and save its manual to a folder you own. Build the shelf one PDF at a time.
